In the course of life everyone will find themselves in the role of a teacher.

Nobody should take that responsibility lightly, Eastern Oregon University senior Andrew Kurkinen believes.

Kurkinen made this point eloquently during the student keynote address Monday night at the opening session of EOUs third annual spring symposium Sharing The Learning.

Make sure that what you pass on is of the highest caliber. You just dont pass on facts when you teach, you pass on a life philosophy, said Kurkinen, who is from Corbett. When we do this we pass on a piece of ourselves.

Kurkinen received the Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship National Award of Excellence earlier this year.

Eastern undergraduates are passing on great amounts of knowledge during todays symposium, which is being conducted at Ackerman, Loso and Zabel halls and the Hoke Center. About 40 presentations and performances by at least 70 students are being given. Everything from the nations third president, Thomas Jefferson, to glass casting is being covered.

A student performance and presentation were given during Monday nights opening session at McKenzie Theatre. Students Alvin Liu, Alight Tsai and Judith Seydel gave a presentation about the 41 pieces of public art in Union County. The pieces are among more than 2,500 public art pieces in Oregon.

The performance involved a Greek theater show by Rebecca Crow, Gina Staubler, Tomi Griffin and James Clayton. The students performed classical Greek monologues and a dance in an original style.

Monday nights opening session also featured a talk by Phil Creighton, the universitys president.

This is a celebration of the best and brightest at Eastern, Creighton said, adding that the value of what the students have learned while preparing their presentations and performances cannot be underestimated.

Creighton quoted a proverb to make his point.

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand, Creighton said.

The closing session of the symposium begins tonight at 7 at McKenzie Theatre. Don Gray, an award-winning artist from Union County who now lives in Murrito, Calif., will give the sessions keynote address.

All presentations are free and open to the public.
