WALLOWA LAKE — The weekend's 28th annual Alpenfest celebration will be remembered for more than yodeling and band music.

Friday began as usual with the craft booths opening. However, shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday Joseph fire trucks responded to a fire at Eagle Cap Chalets. The fire was limited to a circuit breaker box.

That evening world class yodeler Kerry Christensen began performing, and the Alpine All Star Band played dance music.

About 9 p.m. Wallowa County Sheriff's Deputy John Campbell responded to a report that Jean Bennett, 80, of Baker City had suffered cardiac arrest while dancing to "In the Mood." A physician and nurse on the scene began administering CPR.

Campbell then administered two shocks with the automatic defibrillator he carries in his car.

Bennett was revived, taken by ambulance to Wallowa Memorial Hospital, then flown to Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland. She was released Monday morning.

The Wallowa County Search and Rescue unit was busy Saturday. It coordinated a helicopter evacuation by Spokane's Med-Star of Coleen Storms, 30, from Red's Horse Ranch up the Minam River.

The Kelso, Wash., woman, had been thrown from a horse. She was flown to Wallowa Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.

Her horse was injured and had to be put down.

Not to be outdone, the Imnaha Canyon Days attracted KOIN-6 TV personality Ray Sommers. The Portland channel will air coverage of that event at some future date.
