UNION — Dona Schram was overwhelmed about being selected as grand marshal for this week's 95th annual Eastern Oregon Livestock Show.

"Oh, I cried," she recalled in her house with a laugh. "I was very thrilled."

She said it is an honor for her entire family.

Dona's late husband, Mace, was the livestock show veterinarian for many years. Daughter Heidi Schram Denton was the 1984 EOLS queen.

Dona's other five children have also worked and participated in past shows. Schram has worked on a lot of committees.

Schram went to her first show in 1968, and she continues to attend because it benefits the community.

"Our family has kind of believed that you should give back to your community," she said. "You get a lot from your community and should give something back. This is a big event for Union."

She has enjoyed all of the shows for the past 34 years and could not pick out a favorite part.

"One thing contributes to the other, and it's just a great show," she said.

Schram remembers shows with better weather.

"I don't remember one year being better than the next, I guess, other than maybe the years it didn't rain," she said. "That was better."

It's a tossup on whether Union will receive rain Saturday. The Grande Ronde Valley forecast calls for cool and cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers.

Dona and Mace moved to the community in 1967 because it was a good place to raise children.

Five children are now scattered from Salem to Wilsonville and from to Seattle to Bend to Omaha. Heidi is the only one living here. Dona has 12 grandchildren.

Schram is originally from WaKeeney, Kan. She has lived in Oregon since the fourth grade.

Schram is in many organizations and spends a lot of time with her family.

Her family is coming to see her this time around. She will be in Friday's 2 p.m. parade.

"I'm just pretty excited about all of this," she said. "All of the kids and the grandkids are coming. And I have two brother-in-laws and wives and a sister-in-law and nieces and nephews coming. We may look like an RV park out here."
