A Fulbright scholar, dean and sociologist from Louisiana has been named to Eastern Oregon Universitys second highest position.
John Miller, dean of the college of arts and sciences at Southeastern Louisiana University, has been named EOUs next provost and dean of academic affairs. He will formally be appointed to the position on July 1, 2002.
Miller has served as a dean at Southeastern Louisiana since 1993. The state school, in Hammond, has about 14,000 students.
Miller was born and raised in Eugene and graduated from North Eugene High School in 1964. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in sociology from the University of Oregon.
My wife Linda and I are very happy to return to Oregon, Miller said.
The provost and vice president for academic affairs is the second ranking individual at EOU. The individual in the position serves as the institutions chief academic officer.
Im very happy that Dr. Miller will be joining the Eastern Oregon University community, said EOU President Phil Creighton. His skills, experience, leadership and vision are a perfect match for our future. Im looking forward to
working with John as we develop Oregons premier public liberal arts
Miller traveled to Germany as a Fulbright Scholar in 1990. Between 1991 and 1998 he served as the editor of the Journal of Applied Sociology. Miller has published articles on subjects including alternative dispute resolution, management of water resources, teaching sociology, and environmental public policy issues.
His interests include exploring methods of enhancing student learning through service-learning, international education, the development
of learning communities and undergraduate research opportunities.
He said he is excited about the opportunity to come to Eastern.
As I read about Eastern Oregon University and visited
La Grande, it was clear that the faculty, staff and students share a deep commitment to teaching and learning. The recent growth in enrollment, the new Science Center (which will soon be built) and the success of Easterns graduates are direct results of EOUs commitment to excellence, Miller said.
Miller will succeed Bruce Shepard, who served as Easterns provost and dean of academic affairs for six years before leaving in November to become chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay. A chancellor of a state university in Wisconsin is the equivalent of a university president in Oregon.
Burr Betts, a professor of biology at EOU, is serving as interim provost.
