EOU to play men's soccer next fall
Eastern Oregon University announced in a Thursday press conference that it will launch it's mens soccer program to play in fall 2014.
"I'm very happy about this," said Jay Kenton, interim EOU president. "We're here for the long run."
Kenton said the addition of the men's soccer program will help the university in a time of financial stress. Revenues from the program nearly match expenditures for it, Kenton said, meaning the program will enable the university to look to the tri-state region for recruiting, likely tapping into a rising demographic, the Latino population.
"It made a lot of sense," he said.
Anji Weissenfluh, EOU athletic director, said the decision to add the program was done after discussions with stakeholders and ensuring the financial viability of the program.
"It was not made in a vacuum," she said.
Weissenfluh said her top priority is getting a head coach on board to lead a 26-man team. She hopes to make a hire this fall following a national search.
