Early graduation policy not changed
ELGIN — The Elgin School Board agreed via consensus on Monday not to change its early graduation policy.
School district policy presently allows students who have completed all of their graduation requirements to graduate before the end of their senior year if they receive permission from the school board. The board on Monday discussed a proposal to adopt a new policy allowing all seniors who have completed their requirements to graduate early without board approval.
The board decided, however, to retain its present policy.
“We want to continue deciding on a case by case basis. We want to do what best meets the needs of each student,’’ said Elgin School District Superintendent Wayne Herron.
The Elgin School Board, also on Monday decided to again have a softball co-op with Imbler High School. Elgin and Imbler high schools have combined for a softball co-op for at least the past six years. Herron said the co-op has been successful.
“It has worked out well,’’ Herron said.
The superintendent noted that in many years it would be difficult for at least one of the schools to have a team because of low turnouts.
The co-op, though, is making it possible for all girls at Imbler and Elgin high schools to play high school softball each spring if they want to, Herron said.
