Elgin fills mayor, councilor positions

ELGIN — During its August meeting, the Elgin City Council appointed Wayne Voth as a councilor to fill the vacancy created by the earlier appointment of John Stover as Elgin’s mayor. The council also appointed Pat McMullen as council president.

In July, Council President Stover was appointed mayor by the city council over two other candidates for the seat, Brent Linville and Tim McGinness. Stover will act as Elgin’s mayor for the next year and a half.

He replaces Carmen Gentry, who resigned in June because she was moving outside the city limits. She had served for six years.

Stover’s resume includes two terms of service on the city council and leadership in significant city projects, including the renovation of the Opera House and upgrading the aging water and sewer systems. As mayor he also plans to continue efforts to clean up and beautify the city.

Stover’s vacated councilor seat and role as president were filled by appointment. Voth was appointed as councilor and McMullen as council president. Voth was sworn in on Aug. 11 by Mayor Stover.

Voth and his wife have been residents of Elgin for nearly two years, during which time they have immersed themselves in civic organizations and activities, including annual EDGE meetings and participation in the UCEDC-sponsored “Building Communities” strategic planning meeting. As a regular attendee of the city council meetings, Voth volunteered as a member of the city budget committee and attended the state-sponsored budget law class.

“I can bring to the table not only a visible interest in Elgin’s future, but a willingness to expend the effort necessary to actively represent the people of Elgin in council decisions. I want to help educate the citizenry on matters that concern us all,” Voth wrote in his application letter.

With all council seats now filled, the council will meet in a work session Tuesday at 7 p.m. at city hall to address the city’s “Safe Drinking Water” project.
