PARADE OF LIGHTS: Bumper to bumper traffic moves at a snails pace on I-84 west of La Grande early Monday evening. A four-truck, chain-reaction accident near Meacham at 2:30 p.m. halted westbound traffic until 6:30 p.m. when one lane was reopened allowing kegged-up traffic to start flowing again. (The Observer/PHIL BULLOCK).

Two people were treated and released with minor injuries at the Grande Ronde Hospital after four trucks were involved in a chain-reaction accident on Interstate 84 two miles west of Meacham Monday afternoon.

A braking and slowing problem on the icy, snow-packed westbound roadway triggered the accident, Oregon State Police reported.

Involved were drivers Herbert Jenkins, 53, of Olympia, Wash., Del Woodward, 28, and Amanda Woodward, 25, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Robert Parks, 32, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Terry Wayne Moschkau, 36, of Salt Lake City. Milton Gilbert, 19, of Clifton, Colo., was Parks passenger.

The freeway was closed or restricted to one-lane of traffic from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The four trucks all had damage and had to be towed to Pendleton, said Marilyn Holt, the transportation maintenance manager at Meacham for the Oregon Department of Transportation.

They were all smashed, she said.
