Five I-84 truck chain-up sites constructed or improved east of Pendleton

PENDLETON — Beginning next week Oregon Department of Transportation contractor Oakridge Sand and Gravel from Oakridge, Oregon will begin a $2.1 million highway project to construct new, or enhance existing truck chain areas between Exit 216 near Wildhorse Resort and the Exit 246 Kamela Interchange.

Along the eastbound freeway a new truck chain up area will be constructed near mile post 237.5 and the existing site near mile post 227.5 will be upgraded. Along the westbound freeway new sites for installing or removing truck chains will be added near mile posts 217, 225.6 and 245. The project will result in shoulder and intermittent lane closures at the five locations. Travelers are cautioned to slow down and watch for crews, trucks and equipment in these areas through the summer months. The project is expected to be completed by the fall.

“Overhead lights will be added to several of these sites to create a safer place for truck drivers to install or remove chain during winter weather,” said ODOT Project Inspector Brent Merriman. “The project marks the beginning of another busy highway construction season here in eastern Oregon and ODOT greatly appreciates travelers keeping safety in mind while driving through these work zones. We want everyone to get home safe at the end of the day.”

A separate, multi-year interstate project anticipated to start around June will resurface the eastbound and westbound freeways between Exit 246 and the Second Street overpass at La Grande near mile post 260. That project will also include new and enhanced chain areas, upgraded median barriers and a truck climbing lane for westbound traffic along the Spring Creek grade near mile post 247.

A full listing of ODOT’s summer construction plans for the state, including anticipated traffic impacts will be posted on the state’s website next month.
