Meacham landowner concerned about clear cutting, use of herbicides next door to her property

Meacham resident Charlene Davis feels she is at a loss.

Since land next to hers on Forest Road 3030 was clear cut two summers ago, she says she’s dealing with the aftermath and how it’s affected her Chipmunk Ranch.

“It’s changed my climate,” she said. “My temperature has changed. The wind has doubled.”

Tuesday morning a crew was on the adjacent land, owned by Hancock Forest Management, to do reforestation work — and treat some of the seedlings with herbicide.

“They’re poisoning the ground,” Davis said. “I have a wildlife refuge here. I give (the animals) mostly water and salt.”

Oregon Department of Forestry’s Hans Rudolf was on hand to make sure the crew was following protocol for treating the land, which is up a slope from Davis’ ranch.

“It’s their property,” Rudolf said. “They’re following the rules.”

When Davis asked Rudolf if it wouldn’t run off and get into her water, Rudolf said he couldn’t guarantee it.
