Former school chief posts $100,000 bail, released from Union Co. jail

Nikolai had been lodged in the Union County Correctional Facility since Friday morning. He was released after someone in Washington County posted $100,000 bail for him, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office. The amount is 10 percent of the $1 million bail set by a judge in Washington County.

Nikolai, 71, resigned as La Grande’s interim superintendent Friday after being arrested on charges of four counts of sex abuse of a child. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred April 19 at a birthday party in a north Hillsboro home.

A Washington County grand jury, following an investigation, handed down an indictment for Nikolai’s arrest.

Nikolai was arrested in his office Friday morning by La Grande Police officers, a Hillsboro detective and an FBI agent.
