Local non-profit organizations will share in a grant recently awarded Union County to help with emergency food and shelter programs. Carmen Gentry, food bank coordinator for Community Connection of Northeast Oregon, said the county has received an allocation of $22,149. She said distribution of funds benefit local nonprofits engaged in aiding in emergency food, shelter or utility assistance. Gentry said that the funds come from a national board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. The board is made up of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA; The Salvation Army; United Jewish Communities; and United Way of America. A local board chaired by Gentry is charged with distributing the funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-needs areas around the country. Under the terms of the grant, local agencies chosen to receive funds must meet these requirements: • Be private voluntary non-profits or units of government. • Be eligible to receive federal funds. • Have an accounting system. • Practice nondiscrimination. • Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and or shelter programs. • If they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Gentry said she encourages all eligible Union County organizations to apply.
