HERE COMES THE GUARD
About 125 members of the Oregon National Guard will begin training at the local armory Friday to assist in the wildfire suppression efforts in the state.
A similar number begins training the same day in Bend.
Gov. John Kitzhaber on Tuesday ordered the Guard to begin weeklong training at various sites.
Among those training will be members of the 3rd Battalion, 116th Cavalry, headquartered in La Grande.
The soldiers will undergo a 30-hour basic firefighting course, learning safety on the fire line, how to go about dousing hot spots, and getting general firefighting skills.
Beginning Tuesday, two more firefighting schools for 125 soldiers each will start up at Bend and in Portland.
After training, 20-person crews are formed to fight fires, with additional personnel on each crew.
It has not been determined to which fires the crews will be assigned, according to the Guard.
