HOUSE BURNS IN LA GRANDE SUNDAY
Nobody was hurt in a house fire early Sunday morning in La Grande.
The fire, which involved a one-story home at 117 20th St., was reported at 3:20 a.m. Two people were in the home when the fire started.
The home is owned by Charlotte Stewart of La Grande. Its occupant is her son Daniel Stewart.
The La Grande Fire Department sent five vehicles and 16 firefighters to the blaze. The fire damage was confined to the attic. However, other parts of the home did sustain smoke damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The home had smoke alarms but they were not functioning.
The fire was first noticed when one of the occupants awoke to see flames flickering through the wall.
"They were extremely lucky,'' said Lois Rieke, the La Grande Fire Depart- ment's fire safety coordinator.
