I-84 opens after grass fire in median
The East Oregonian reported that the fire started in the median of I-84 about three miles west of Pendleton resulted in the highway closure and threatened nearby structures.
Crews from multiple fire departments worked to protect the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport and the Umatilla County Justice Center. Crews also worked to stop traffic through the area, which was experiencing strong winds.
I-84 re-opened just before 4 p.m. Students from certain areas of Umatilla County were kept at school until the roads re-open. The Oregon State Police also announced that its Pendleton office would close early for the day due to fire suppression efforts. The OSP Pendleton Area Command is scheduled to operate as normal Friday.
I-84 exit 207 remains closed due to impacts from the fire, according to ODOT. Motorists are advised to use another exit and to avoid the area around the airport as crews mop-up the fire.
