I-84 wreck claims life of Utah man

A Utah man died and four others received minor injuries early Sunday morning after their vehicle went out of control on black ice and crashed into a small ravine along eastbound Interstate 84 near Meacham.

Some of the injured, followed by Oregon State Police troopers, performed CPR on the victim, 83-year-old Clarence Randall Campbell, until he was pronounced dead at the scene by medical responders.

According to OSP Senior Trooper Jeremy Gunter, on Sunday at approximately 2:36 a.m. a vehicle driven by Ryan Sean Campbell, 28, Riverton, Utah, was eastbound on the highway near milepost 238 with three other adult occupants and one child.

Campbell encountered an area of black ice and the vehicle began to slide, the OSP said. He attempted to correct but the vehicle slid off the roadway, struck a guardrail and traveled down a small ravine.

The passengers were identified as Clarence Campbell and his wife, Elna S. Campbell, 81, both from South Jordan, Utah; Peggy L. Maynes, 56, from South Jordan; and, a 3-year-old boy from Riverton, Utah.

After the crash, some family members performed CPR on Clarence Campbell until OSP troopers arrived and resumed CPR efforts.

About 30 minutes after OSP started resuscitation efforts, medical personnel arrived and pronounced him deceased.

The other four vehicle occupants were transported by Pendleton Ambulance to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Pendleton for treatment of minor injuries.

Ryan Campbell, Clarence Campbell and the child were all using safety restraints.

An investigation indicates speed was not a factor. Due to icy roadway conditions and multiple crashes in the area, the freeway was closed for approximately two hours.
