ISLAND AVE. WORK NEARS COMPLETION

The Oregon Department of Transportation is almost finished with its $595,453 facelift of a 1.2-mile section of Island Avenue.

The resurfacing project, which covers the area from Adams Avenue to Riddle Road, will be done by the end of today and lane striping will take place Thursday and Friday, said ODOT public information representative Tom Strandberg.

Work was scheduled to start April 2 but was delayed temporarily by the weather. It will be finished by the original May 1 completion date.

The contractor, J.C. Compton Contractor Inc. of McMinnville, will be finished Friday, but ODOT crews will finish up some signal loop work Monday, Strandberg said.

The company drilled out existing pavement on Island Avenue and on the on and off ramps at the Island Avenue exit, Exit 261. The only traffic bottleneck occurred when the ramps had to be closed a day and a half for grinding and paving, Strandberg said.

There were portable message signs along the interstate to direct traffic to use ramps at Exits 259 and 265 during the ramp closure period.

There were no major problems and things went pretty smoothly except for the one time the ramps were closed. There were lane closures but no traffic tieups. For as big a project as it was, the project was done pretty quickly, he said.

Pavement work on the four-lane Island Avenue started at the Riddle Road intersection and moved toward Adams Avenue. Traffic was reduced in the work areas to one lane at various times.

The work involved grinding out the old pavement and laying down a new two-inch layer of asphalt.
