IMBLER — An informational meeting on the Imbler School District’s new charter system is planned for Monday.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in Room 1 of Imbler High School. Information regarding the Imbler School District’s charter status and enrollment for 2008-09 will be presented. People will be able to meet the members of Imbler’s seven-member charter council at the meeting. The Imbler School District’s charter system received a financial boost earlier this month. The Oregon Department of Education announced that the school district will receive a $25,000 federal start-up grant for a charter system, said Imbler Superintendent Doug Hislop. The fact that Imbler qualified for the grant means that it will be eligible for more federal charter grants in the future. Parents of students interested in enrolling in Imbler’s charter system who have not previously attended the Imbler School District are urged to attend Monday’s meeting. This will help Imbler officials plan for the upcoming school year. The Oregon Department of Education approved the school district’s application for charter status in May. The Imbler School Board had voted to seek charter status for its district in March. Charter systems are publicly funded school districts that have been freed of some state and federal regulations that apply to public schools. The Imbler district sought charter status because this will make it less difficult to continue getting transfer students. It is not difficult to transfer to a charter system or transfer out. The Imbler district had about 70 transfer students in 2007-08. The vast majority of educational entries with charter status in Oregon are schools within districts. The Imbler district is one of five charter systems in the state. |
