Dale De Long is concluding his 24-year tenure as mayor of Island City on top.

De Long was saluted as one of Oregon’s best mayors on Saturday in Pendleton, receiving the prestigious Mayor’s Leadership Award. The award was presented at the Oregon Mayors Association Summer Conference.

The honor left De Long a bit stunned.

“I was very surprised. I had no idea (that I had been nominated),” said De Long, who will step down as Island City mayor when his present term expires Dec. 31.

De Long was named the top mayor for cities with less than 3,000 residents. He was the only recipient of the award in the category.

De Long was nominated by his staff for the award.

The mayor was praised for the personal interest he takes in the community and how hard he tries to make city government accessible to the public, stated a letter from his staff nominating him for the award.

“Mayor De Long has an open door policy with his employees and the general public and strives to represent his constituents without letting opinions cloud an issue,” said City Recorder and Public Works Director Judy Rygg while reading the letter at a Island City City Council meeting Monday.
