Joseph man pleads guilty, no contest to bar brawl related charges

ENTERPRISE — A Joseph man has pleaded guilty and no contest to two of five charges in relation to an August bar brawl.

Two more men are expected to be charged in relation to the fight.

A La Grande man pleaded not guilty Jan. 30 on 10 charges resulting from a car wreck after the fight.

Dan Martin, 52, pleaded guilty last week to second-degree disorderly conduct (a B misdemeanor). He pleaded no contest to fourth-degree assault (an A misdemeanor).

The pleas came out of a negotiated plea bargain with Wallowa County District Attorney Mona K. Williams. Martin had no attorney.

His sentencing hearing is set for 10:45 a.m. May 21.

At that time it will be considered whether to drop the other charges.

Martin was arrested 12 days after an incident at Shooters bar in Joseph the early morning of Sunday, Aug. 5. Police described it as a bar brawl.

Brian Beausoleil Jr., 34, was later arrested in connection with the car crash and will also likely face charges in relation to the fight, Williams said.

Beausoleil was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants (an A misdemeanor), four counts of reckless endangering of another (A misdemeanors), two counts of third-degree assault (C felonies) and two counts of second-degree assault (B felonies).

Beausoleil was arraigned on the charges after a secret indictment.

An alternate date of June 16 has been set for his five-day trial.

Martin was charged with second-degree intimidation, (an A misdemeanor), second-degree criminal trespass (a C misdemeanor), harassment (a B misdemeanor), second-degree disorderly conduct (a B misdemeanor), and fourth-degree assault (an A misdemeanor).

Martin is married to Joseph Mayor Peggy Kite-Martin.

In the fight, at least a dozen people, including Martin, and five visitors, were allegedly either hit or knocked down, police said.

The fight allegedly spilled out into the street, police said.

The bartender and patrons had tried to break up the fight, and the fight participants were ordered out of the bar.

Some of the visitors then allegedly re-entered the bar, knocking down a bartender in their effort to exact revenge on Martin, police said.

The five visitors included Beausoleil, Damon Lee Stevens, 32, and Lawrence W. Puckett Jr., 32, all of La Grande; Stacey D. Williams, 36, of Bonney Lakes, Wash.; and Michael Lee Williams, 26, of Redmond.

All five reportedly fled the scene when police were called to the bar.

The five were reportedly in town for a family reunion and were staying at the south end of Wallowa Lake.

Beausoleil was allegedly driving a 2002 Chrysler, carrying all five men along Highway 351 toward the south end of the lake.

At about milepost 5 the car encountered the sharp curve, went 100 feet up a driveway and crashed.

Two of the men were transported to Wallowa Memorial Hospital, treated and released.

Beausoleil, Stevens and Williams were flown to Spokane’s Sacred Heart Medical Center.
