Joseph man takes over as Wallowa Lake fire chief

WALLOWA LAKE – Jeffrey Wecks of Joseph is the new fire chief of the Wallowa Lake Rural Fire Protection District. Directors of the Lake District appointed Wecks Nov. 19 at their monthly meeting.

Wecks is an assistant chief of the Joseph Fire Department, a journeyman electrician, and maintenance and facilities manager of the Wallowa Resources’ Stewardship Center in Enterprise. He coaches youth soccer and volunteers for Chief Joseph Days Rodeo and the Wallowa County 4-H horse program.

The Wallowa Lake position is volunteer and administrative. Emergency responses are handled by the Joseph Fire Department under contract.

The board agreed to pay a $250 monthly stipend to cover Wecks’s mileage and other expenses. The stipend amount will be reviewed in three months.

Wecks succeeds Tom Clevenger, who resigned last month citing an overabundance of responsibilities. Clevenger, a retired career fire captain, remains fire chief of Joseph. He is a prize-winning artisan of segmented woodworking pieces. His creations are on exhibit at Stewart Jones Designs of Joseph.

The Joseph Fire Department continues to seek additional volunteer firefighters from the Wallowa Lake and Joseph areas. For information contact Wecks at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or any Joseph firefighter.
