LA GRANDE MAN CHARGED WITH SETTING ELGIN HOUSE FIRE
A La Grande man has been charged with deliberately setting a fire that completely destroyed a home north of Elgin.
David Ellwood Mayer, 32, was arraigned Wednesday in Union County Circuit Court on first-degree burglary and arson charges. Bail has been set at $150,000.
Judge Phil Mendiguren ordered that if Mayer makes bail, a hearing must be held to set conditions of release.
According to District Attorney Russ West, Mayer is accused of setting fire to the home of Tom and Jaylene Witherspoon of 73762 Highway 82, north of Elgin. West said Mayer allegedly first burglarized the home Friday evening and returned early Sunday morning and set the fire.
Several Union County and state agencies were involved in the investigation that resulted in Mayer's arrest, West said. Investigators sifted through the burned contents of the house in an effort to find the cause of the fire.
The District Attorney served a search warrant Tuesday on Mayer's Foley Building apartment and seized clothing and documents.
The fire at the Witherspoon home was reported early Sunday morning and by the time the Elgin Fire Department arrived the house was engulfed in flames. Fire Chief Pat McDonald said the glow from the blaze could be seen from the highway. Firefighters were unable to save the building and all contents were lost.
The Witherspoons were away on vacation when the fire occurred.
