Lewis ready for return to La Grande

Music always percolates in the melodic mind of Nicole Lewis.

“I’m always thinking about music,” said Lewis who grew up in La Grande and now lives in Spokane.

Even when Lewis is on family horse-packing trips in the Wallowas she will pull out a pencil or voice recorder to take down ideas for song lyrics and rhythms.

The creative musical energy which is such an integral part of Lewis is energy she will be sharing in a big way on Friday at the Union County Fair.

Lewis, for the second straight year, is the headline entertainer at Union County Fair.

“I’m really, really excited,” said Lewis, the daughter of Brent and Susan Lewis of
La Grande.

Lewis and her band, which plays country and rock, will perform at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday. Most of the group’s original material will be played at the evening concert.

Lewis and her band drew a capacity crowd for their evening show at the fair a year ago.

“It was really humbling since a lot of our music is original,” Lewis said.

Lewis is a 2004 graduate of La Grande High School and a 2008 graduate of Gonzaga University. Her band recently returned from Nashville, Tenn., where it spent five days at the Dark Horse recording studio working on a new CD.

The CD will be released later this year. Songs from the CD will be performed during Lewis’ evening concert.

The CD will be Lewis’ second. Her first, “Life With Gravity,” was released in 2009.

Lewis, a vocalist and piano player, is comfortable in recording studios but embraces the chance to perform in concert. She enjoys trying to establish a connection with her audience.

“It’s like a conversation. I speak better through music,” she said.

Lewis’ appearance at the Union County Fair will be one of many she and her band are making in the Northwest this summer.

“This is the one I’ve been looking forward to the most,” she said. “Everyone here is so sweet.”
