Rice hearing set for Tuesday canceled

A plea hearing for Joel Rice that was scheduled for Tuesday was canceled. Rice is charged with seven counts of criminal mischief in the first degree, five counts of aggravated animal abuse in the first degree and two counts of animal abuse in the first degree in connection with Glass Hill Road cattle shootings that occurred in August.

The case is being prosecuted by Wallowa County District Attorney Mona Williams because of Rice’s involvement with the Union County drug court. Rice is a psychiatrist in La Grande.

Rice is next scheduled to appear in court at 11 a.m. Jan. 9 in regard to a motion.

Bake, craft sale helps Relay for Life 

UNION — A bake/craft sale for Relay for Life will take place at 9 a.m. Friday in front of the Union Post Office.

Cove families get free toys for Christmas 

COVE — A toy drive for Cove children culminates with distribution to families from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Cove United Methodist Church basement. Cheri’s Main Street Salon and the church joined to help families needing assistance to make sure children have gifts for Christmas. Gift-wrapping supplies will be available to wrap the gifts on site. Potter’s House to be ‘all things Santa’ 

To find Santa this weekend, look no further than The Potter’s House at 1601 Sixth St., which is having an “all things Santa” weekend.

Mr. Claus himself will be at the gift house and gallery from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. No photographer will be on hand for the casual event, but patrons are invited to bring their own cameras to capture their kids with Santa — and the elves that will be around.

Also, The Potter’s House has an event that will allow everyone to become Santa to a local family. The business has adopted a four-person family and is collecting items for the family. Donations of personal hygiene products, cleaning supplies, Legos and books for kids ages 8 to 12 are welcome.

Literacy Center takes Christmas break

The Literacy Center at Cook Memorial Library will be taking a Christmas break for students and teachers. The center’s last day open will be Thursday, and it will reopen Jan. 14. Regular hours are from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. For more information on tutoring or volunteering, call the library at 541-962-1339.

Holiday Open House set for this afternoon

The La Grande City Council, city manager and city staff invite all to a Holiday Open House that will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at La Grande City Hall in the council chambers. Light refreshments will be served. A tour of City Hall, which is on the National Historic Register, will be provided upon request.
