MEETING SET TO ORGANIZE SMITHSONIAN EXHIBITION

Say Smithsonian and most people think of Americas museums in Washington, D.C.

But say Smithsonian this week, and people in Northeast Oregon will be thinking about a volunteer meeting Thursday to make plans for a visit from the Smithsonian Institutions Traveling Exhibition Service known as Museum on Main Street.

The meeting, at 5:30 p.m. at Ten Depot Street, is for anyone interested in helping put together the exhibit that will be set up at the Union County Museum in Union from Aug. 18 to Sept. 28.

The program is bringing the Smithsonian exhibit Yesterdays Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future.

The exhibit is described as what Americans have envisioned the future will look like at points during the past 100 years. From ray-guns to monorails, from nuclear-powered cars to waterproof living rooms that could be cleaned with a garden hose, American expectations about the future centered around rapid, breathtaking advances in science and technology.

The Union County Museum is one of only six Oregon stops for the exhibit.

Thursdays meeting will be to form a planning committee for the exhibit. Volunteers will be needed for many sub-committees, including people interested in set-up, publicity, development of local exhibits, related events, tours and training.

Anyone interested in helping with the project is asked to call 963-8766 before the meeting.

Those who cant attend Thursdays meeting, but are interested in the program, can call Julie at 963-7664.
