MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES ON TAP IN BOTH COUNTIES

Memorial Day ceremonies will be conducted at four cemeteries in Union and Wallowa counties Monday.
A memorial service starts at 11 a.m. at La Grandes Grandview Cemetery, which is off 20th Street at Foothill Road.
The colors will be presented by the National Guard, the National Anthem will be sung by Audria Simonis, a talk will be presented by Roger Cochran, pastor at Trinity Baptist Church and chaplain of the Union County Sheriffs Department, and a closing prayer will be offered by D.S. Arnott III.
Taps will be played by Tim Blaylock. Lt. Col. Allen Rainsberry (retired), will handle the welcome and introductions.
The annual Avenue of Flags, a display that borders the road inside the cemetery, will accompany the service. The flags will be displayed through the weekend.
The flags will be put up by American Legion Post 43.
A meeting for people who would like to help with the Avenue of Flags project will be conducted from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at the American Legion Hall, 301 Fir St. Flags and poles will be assembled.
On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, volunteers will meet at Grandview Cemetery to put up flags between 6 and 7 a.m. At 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday volunteers will reassemble at the cemetery to remove flags before sundown.
On Monday volunteers will meet at 3 p.m. to retrieve the flags and poles.
Anyone who like to help with the Avenue of Flags project should call Mike Rynearson, first vice-president of the Union County Veterans Council, at 963-6001 or 963-5141.
The service and Avenue of Flags is sponsored by local veterans groups.
Those who would like to help with placing small flags on veterans graves in Union County should call the following people:

Memorial Day ceremonies will be conducted at three local cemeteries in Wallowa County. All will be put on by American Legion Wallowa Lake Post 157.
Following are the places and times for the ceremonies:
Alder Slope Cemetery, 9:45 a.m.
Joseph Airport Cemetery, 10:15 a.m.
Prairie Creek Cemetery, 11:30 a.m.
Those participating in the ceremonies will meet at the Legion Hall, 104 N. Main St., Joseph, at 9 a.m. All American Legion members interested in being in the color guard or rifle squad can sign up then. For information call Mike Teece at 432-6240.
