Man burned during dispute
A man is in unknown condition at the Emanuel Burn Center in Portland this morning after a conflict Thursday night in Elgin.
Police say two men got into a disagreement at 260 N. 12th St. around 11:30 p.m.
“Apparently one of the men caught fire,” said Union County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Nick Pallis.
Jeffrey Alan Black, 45, was transported by Life Flight to Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash., and was later transported to the burn center at Emanuel.
His condition is unknown, but Pallis said he was “burned quite badly.”
Police have named Kirk Ray Pickens, 45, as a suspect in the case but have not made any arrests, Pallis said.
Police are unsure of the nature of the conflict between the men. They also do not know how Black caught fire, Pallis said.
Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies along with Oregon State Police and an OSP forensics team are at the site of the incident this morning mapping the scene.
Pallis said the incident remains under investigation.
