A La Grande man was in the Union County jail this morning, charged with numerous crimes in connection with a series of car prowls on the city’s south side.

Sgt. Lisa Reddington of the La Grande Police Department said Christopher Lee Gonsalves, 19, was taken into custody Wednesday on a parole and probation detainer, and later charged in the car prowl spree.

Gonsalves was charged with three counts unauthorized entry in a motor vehicle, one count of theft in the first degree, one count of theft in the third degree, two counts of criminal mischief in the third degree, and one count of criminal mischief in the first degree.

Cases are still under investigation and more charges may be made later, Reddington said.

The car prowls, on 18th and 20th streets and in the Sunny Hills district, occurred late Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Police received at least 24 reports of break-ins.

Two firearms were among the items stolen. Reddington said the guns were recovered by police Wednesday night. In some of the cases, the robbers appear to have used a pellet gun to shatter vehicle windows.

Police are also investigating a recent rash of car prowls on the city’s north side.

Reddington said officers have a few leads, but would appreciate help from the public.

“If someone has information or saw anything suspicious, give us a call,” she said.

The number is 963-1017.

Reddington said residents should remember to never leave anything of value in a parked car or pickup truck.

“Firearms, purses, electronics, anything small enough to carry away, are the things they’re looking for,” she said.
