Man held on $500,000 bail for alleged assault on grandparents
Kassel was arraigned on charges of first-degree assault, three charges of second-degree assault and two charges of third-degree assault stemming from an incident Wednesday on Hot Lake Lane.
Deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police troopers responded to an assault in progress with a knife at the Hot Lake Lane residence of Harry and Susan Frashier, Kassel’s grandparents Wednesday afternoon.
At Kassel’s arraignment on Thursday, Donald Frashier, a relative of Kassel’s who spoke on behalf of the Kassel family, agreed with Judge Brian Dretke’s decision to not release Kassel.
Early in his arraignment, Kassel said he had been working for a construction company recently in Washington.
Donald Frashier discredited the information about Kassel’s employment history, saying he has been unemployed for quite some time.
Frashier added that Kassel is on medication for his mental health and may not have been taking it the day of the assault as well as the day of his arraignment.
District Attorney Kelsie McDaniel said Kassel has two prior criminal incidents out of Nevada that were similar to Wednesday’s incident.
