Jet flyover will be highlight of Union County ceremony
One or two F-15 Eagle fighter jets are scheduled to fly over La Grande on Memorial Day during the annual Avenue of Flags ceremony at Grandview Cemetery.
The flyover is slated for noon, coinciding with the playing of Taps and the raising of the flag. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.
The jet or jets will be from the 173rd Fighter Wing of the Oregon Air National Guard base in Klamath Falls.
The Summerville Cemetery will be hosting a Memorial Day observance at 8 a.m. Monday. The observance will start with a colors program at 8 a.m. sharp, followed by a short program honoring local veterans.
Veterans of Foreign Wars High Valley Post 4060 in Union will be observing Veterans Day an 10 a.m. Monday at Union City Park. All community members are invited to attend.
A Memorial Day lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. Monday at Cove United Methodist Church. The ala carte menu will include sandwiches, salads and homemade pies.
Each Memorial Day weekend, American Legion Post 43 lines the lanes at Grandview Cemetery with American flags in a round-the-clock display that is illuminated at night.
The post is seeking volunteers to help prepare the flags Friday, place them on Saturday morning, and take them down down Monday. Those who can help should call Lonnie at 541-963-2908.
Local veterans groups and other organizations are placing flags this weekend at other cemeteries, including Cove and Union.
VFW, American Legion plan services in Wallowa County
Wallowa County veterans will be recognized at services throughout that county on Memorial Day conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
The VFW services are at Bramlet Cemetery north of Wallowa at 9 a.m.; the Wallowa Cemetery at 9:45 a.m.; the Lostine Cemetery at 11 a.m., the Enterprise Cemetery at 12 p.m. and the Fountain of Honor in front of the Wallowa County Courthouse at 1 p.m.
The American Legion services are at the Alder Slope Cemetery outside of Enterprise at 10:30 a.m., the Hurricane Creek Cemetery at 11 a.m. and at the Prairie Creek Cemetery east of Joseph at noon.
