Ombudsman volunteers needed in La Grande
There have been no certified ombudsman volunteers in the La Grande area for more than 10 years, according to Gretchen Jordan, coordinator of volunteers of the Oregon Long Term Care Ombudsman.
“They are an advocate for a resident,” Jordan said. “They’re someone who is appointed by the state of Oregon who works for the resident and is there to represent their rights.”
The ombudsman would visit local senior homes and talk with residents to learn about issues that need to be addressed or to help resolve problems no matter how big or small.
“Sometimes it can be a very simple thing,” she said. “Other times it can be an unusual situation. Residents have their own rights and the volunteer is there to help them.”
Jordan said some seniors going into an assisted living home, look at it like purgatory.
The volunteer goes around and visits the seniors and helps to make their life as happy as possible.
