PREPARING FOR MEMORIAL DAY
Emery Oliver of Summerville pays respect to the hundreds of soldiers buried in the Summerville Cemetery by placing flags on the graves for Memorial Day. Bob Rachau of Imbler, who has assisted with placing flags for several years, waits as Oliver reads off the next name. Thursday marked the 56th straight year that Oliver, a World War II veteran, has placed flags on veterans' graves. Oliver says he relies on his memory for the location of most graves, but more veterans are laid to rest in the cemetery every year. A worn headstone in the historic section of the grounds documents the date 1866 as the first settler buried atop the grassy hill.
