Police: Wanted man arrested
PENDLETON — Law enforcement agencies have arrested the man suspected of two violent crimes in Pendleton.
The man known as Danny Wu was arrested Wednesday night after he was seen hiding in the kitchen of the Pendleton Convention Center, according to police.
At about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Pendleton dispatch received a 911 call reporting that the man known as Danny Wu was seen in the convention center. Less than two minutes later, officers were at the scene.
The Pendleton Police Department, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police responded and swept the building for civilians before backing out, bolstering the number of law enforcement personnel and formulating a plan, according to police.
Just after 8 p.m., the sheriff’s office K-9 unit was preparing to enter the building with officers when an OSP spotted a leg hanging from a second floor ceiling. Officers and the K-9 unit descended on the location and found the man known as Wu hiding in the ceiling. The man was hiding in an area approximately 2 feet by 10 feet alongside HVAC ductwork. He was taken into custody without incident shortly after 8 p.m.
The man was later identified as 23-year-old Lukah Pobzeb Chang. Police believe he had been hiding in the Pendleton Convention Center for at least a week.
Chang was charged with one count of attempted murder for the attack on 53-year-old Karen Lange on Aug. 9 and one count of murder in the stabbing death of 19-year-old AmyJane Brandhagen on Aug. 14, 2012.
Pendleton Police said they responded to more than 100 sightings of Chang in the past two weeks, but none proved to be him.
DNA evidence found earlier this month connected Chang to both the 2012 murder and the attack Aug. 9.
