RESURFACING SET FOR ISLAND AVENUE

The Oregon Department of Transportation is getting ready to give a $595,453 facelift to a 1.2-mile section of Island Avenue.

The resurfacing project will cover the area from Adams Avenue to Riddle Road.

Work will start April 2 and is scheduled to be completed by May 1.

Work will begin with horizontal drilling under the roadway at the La Grande Mall traffic signal, said Transportation Department Construction Specialist Jenise Carter.

No lane changes are expected until April 10. At that time, the Interstate 84 ramps at Exit 261 will be closed for a day and a half for grinding and paving activities, Carter said.

There will be portable message signs along the interstate to direct traffic to use ramps at Exits 259 and 265 during the ramp closure period.

Pavement work will then begin on Island Avenue, starting at the Riddle intersection, moving from there toward Adams Avenue. Traffic will be reduced in the work areas to one lane.

The work is being done by J.C. Compton Contractor Inc. of McMinnville and includes grinding the old pavement out and laying down a new two-inch layer of asphalt.

Permanent striping and installation of traffic signal control loops will be performed after the paving is completed.

Flaggers and other traffic control measures will be in place during the construction work. The Transportation Department advises motorists to drive with caution around the work zones.
