Rare winter wildfires in SW Oregon and Coast Range
Unusually dry, windy conditions have triggered several wildfires in Western Oregon. In the Astoria District between Arch Capes and Manzanita, the 50-acre Falcon Fire is burning, and nearby the 30-acre Shingle Mill Fire. Oregon Dept. of Forestry and partner fire agencies are fighting both blazes.
A temporary flight restriction is in place to prevent conflict with ODF aircraft fighting the fires.
The Oregon Department of Forestry says two small fires were burning Friday on private industrial forest land about 5 miles southeast of Cannon Beach. One was 100 acres, and another was 25 acres.
In southwestern Oregon, where red flag fire warnings were in effect, Grayback Forestry President Mike Wheelock says he sent crews to two fires rekindled from piles of logging slash that were burned last fall.
One is on private timberland outside Shady Cove and the other is on the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest in the Ashland watershed.
Wheelock says crews have attacked the flare-ups aggressively to keep them from spreading off the logged-over areas.
