SPIRITUAL HIGHLIGHTS: Auxiliary Christmas potluck set Monday

The Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary Christmas Potluck will take place Monday at  Zion Lutheran Church. A short meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the lunch to follow.

Oregon Green Free meets Saturday

 The local chapter of Oregon GreenFree meets at noon Saturday at the Integrated Services Building, 1607 Gekeler. Lunch this week will be Mexican. Oregon GreenFree is an Oregon Medical Marijuana Program’s resource center committed to providing information, education and a sense of unity for those who choose to use medicinal cannabis.

Soup Supper tickets now on sale 

The Shelter From the Storm’s annual Soup Supper tickets are now available at Bella Merchandise and the Shelter From the Storm office.

The Soup Supper will be Feb. 22 at the Presbyterian Fellowship Center. Tickets are $30, and organizers of the event say they would make a great Christmas gift. For more information, call the shelter office at 541-963-7226.

Housing authority board meets Tuesday 

A special meeting of the Board of Commissioners for Northeast Oregon Housing Authority will be held via telephone conference at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the NEOHA office, 2608 May Lane. Any interested persons are welcome to attend.

Ambassadors set canned food drive

The Union County 4-H Ambassadors will conduct a community service event Dec. 20.  The Ambassadors will be going door to door in Island City and La Grande from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to pick up non-perishable items for local donation. People can also take items to the 4-H Extension Office in Island City. There will be a labeled Christmas box inside the door for people to drop off the items. The donations will end the night of Dec. 20.

Take photos with Santa Saturday 

A bring-your-own-camera photo opportunity with Santa is taking place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Northeast Oregon Physical Therapy, 301 Fourth St.

Church offers senior Christmas dinner 

UNION — The Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s Annual Senior Citizen Christmas Dinner will take place Sunday. 

Dinner will be served from noon to 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 340 10th St., Union.

All senior citizens in the communities of Union and Cove are invited to a complimentary turkey and ham dinner with all the trimmings. Raffle prizes will be awarded.

CUCU meets Monday evening 

The Coalition of Union County Ukuleles will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Bear Mountain Pizza on Island City Avenue for a Christmas Singalong.  

People are invited to join CUCU and sing with the ukulele group. Loaner ukes are available, and all levels of players are encouraged to come jam and enjoy the fun.

Wednesday night house fire burns floor

COVE — Cove Fire Department responded to a house fire on Mill Creek Lane in Cove around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday night. La Grande Rural Fire Department and Imbler Fire Department also responded to the scene.

La Grande Rural Fire Chief Larry Wooldridge said firefighters believe the fire started under the floor and was related to the furnace in some way. He said the fire did burn a hole in the floor and caused “quite a bit” of smoke damage, but he did not think the home was totaled.

Elgin School Board meets Monday

ELGIN — The Elgin School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the board room of the district office. School district policies will be one subject discussed.

High wind gusts contribute to outage

COVE — Approximately 300 Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative members in and around Cove lost power at 10:05 a.m. Thursday. Another 529 then lost power at 11 a.m. The OTEC crew had to open the sub breaker and repair a broken phase. Power was restored at noon to all. OTEC officials said that high wind gusts in the area contributed to the broken phase.

OTEC board meets Tuesday morning 

BAKER CITY — The Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative Board of Directors will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the headquarters board room,  4005 23rd St., Baker City. 

The meeting will include a workshop with Touchstone Energy.
