SPORTS AT A GLANCE
The eighth-annual Northwest All Martial Arts Challenge takes over the La Grande High School gym again Saturday.
More than 200 participants, competing in forms, weapons and fighting, are entered.
Doors open at 9 a.m. and the tournament starts at 10. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for seniors and children 6-12, and free for children 5 and younger.
First up are forms, in which students demonstrate their moves for judges. A weapons division will be included.
The popular tag team fighting is at noon, with regular kumite (fighting) divisions to follow.
The tournament, founded by Grande Ronde Karate and Kung Fu School owner Ken Johnson, is different in that competitors are placed in pools in their divisions and are guaranteed more than one match. In more martial arts tournaments, competitors are placed in brackets and are finished if they lose.
The Grande Ronde Karate and Kung Fu School will have about 10 athletes entered, and students from Dallas Voss Dark 9 school and Rick Seversons Kenpo school will also participate.
