'STOP' ENDS WITH SUICIDE

By The Observer

A Baker City man, stopped Sunday by police for speeding near Imbler, drove off the road to the railroad tracks and shot himself.

Joshua David Scott, 21, of Baker City, was reportedly driving at 70 mph on Highway 82 near Imbler when he was stopped by Oregon State Police about 12:15 a.m. Sunday.

State Police Sgt. Scott Moore reported that when Trooper Rob Givens tried to stop Scotts Jeep Cherokee, Scott slowed to about 5 mph, pulled on to the shoulder and sped off the road. The vehicle overturned on the railroad tracks and slid more than 100 feet before stopping, police said.

Moore said there is evidence that Scott shot himself with a pistol while the Jeep was

moving.

Givens waited for additional officers to reach the scene before approaching the Jeep. When the officers entered the jeep they found Scott dead with a massive head wound.

Police said they had been advised Saturday night by Baker County of a possible suicidal person driving a Jeep Cherokee, but police were unable to find the vehicle at that time.
