STUDENT FIELD DAY... (The Observer/laura Mackie-hancock).

Michael McNair, right, and Billy Joe Kelsay, fifth-grade students from Greenwood Elementary School, seperate chaff from a handful of wheat to reach the edible kernels inside. Central and Greenwood fifth-graders participated in a field day with the Union County Soil and Water Conservation District Thursday on Mount Glen Road. By rotating through seven stations directed by district staff and volunteers, students get hands-on experience with identifying pests, weeds and the crops grown in the area, testing water quality, and the effects of soil erosion.
