SUGAR IN THE RAW
David Fessler of Imbler directs trucks bearing loads of sugar beets into the loading station on Bond Lane Wednesday. The beets are dumped into a piler and ferried on a conveyor belt to a sampling station. The dirt is then filtered out and the beets are pumped into mounds reaching up to 22 feet high, awaiting transport. The sugar beet operation is managed by Amalgamated Sugar Company of Nyssa, with 10 area growers producing crops. Approximately 2,000 acres of sugar beets will be harvested in a 21-day period. Thousands of tons of sugar beets are hauled to Nyssa where they will be processed to make granulated sugar.
