Sewer work coming soon to 20th Street
Crews are preparing 20th Street for some sewer work.
Roads will be closed on and off before they begin doing the bulk of the work, said Water Superintendent Lee Mannor.
“We’re getting ready to install a 48-inch storm sewer,” Mannor said. “We want to do that prior to the street being reconstructed.”
The storm sewer will re-route water from 16th Street to the slough on 20th Street.
Mannor said crews are in the process of lowering water lines in preparation for the installation. He said utilities crews are also getting ready for the big work that will close the street. That work is scheduled to begin the first week of October.
“We’re having parts delivered there by the drive-in theater and on 18th Street,” Mannor said.
Work on the storm sewer is expected to be completed in November.
The big project, reconstruction of 20th Street, will come later, once funding is available. Mannor said that won’t be until 2015. That project will include reconstruction of the road, and the addition of two bike lanes and sidewalks on either side of the road. It will also include the realignment of the entrance on 18th Street and at the corner next to Bi-Mart, Mannor said.
Work on the storm sewer may not seem like much, but Mannor said it’s a beneficial step for the city.
“Not only does it help with the project, but it allows us to have better control of our storm water,” he said.
