Shelter receives $747K grant

Shelter From the Storm has been awarded a three-year rural grant from the Office on Violence Against Women.

This grant represents a collaborative effort involving the La Grande Police Department, Union County Community Corrections and the nonprofit domestic violence and sexual assault services organization Shelter From the Storm.

The goals of this project are to provide victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking with designated personnel working to increase their safety and hold abusers accountable; provide resources to assist victims healing and recovery; and enhance the ability of rural victims to access advocacy services, resources and professionals trained specifically in sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.

Grant funds will be used to provide a full-time domestic violence and sexual assault investigator within the
La Grande Police Department, a part-time sex offender probation officer, as well as a full-time position at Shelter From the Storm.

Additional funds are allocated to provide counseling services, transportation assistance, program materials and training.

All participating partners in this project are excited about the opportunity this grant gives them to serve the citizens of Union County.

Shelter From the Storm is a domestic violence and sexual assault center providing crisis services including a 24-Hour Crisis Hotline, counseling, advocacy and a Sexual Assault Response Team. The Crisis Hotline number is 541-963-9261. The office is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Fridays. The office number is 541-963-7226.
