Students encouraged to obtain library card

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Cook Memorial Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that students have one of the most important school supplies — a free library card.

Resources at the Cook Memorial Library are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and services that support academic achievement, such as the new AWE Early Literacy Station. The Early Literacy Station is an all-in-one learning solution for children ages 2 through 8. It requires no Internet connection, so it is safe and secure. The latest version features more than 60 educational software titles using graphics and intuitive menus. It is available in English and bilingual Spanish.

Students can use their library cards from home, too.  The library offers access to educational resources, like e-books and links to websites and databases such as Awesome Stories, Kids Only, Learning Express, Opposing Viewpoints and magazine and reference compilations including Junior Reference Collection, InfoBits and Junior Edition K12. These resources may be accessed through the library’s website, www.cityoflagrande.org/library under “Links to External Databases and Other Websites.”

“Our library provides all types of students with the tools they need to succeed,”  Library Director Terri Washburn said. “We provide students with exciting and engaging programs that make learning fun and resources that they can access from the library or from home — all with a free library card. It is for these reasons that a library card is most important school supply of all.”

For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit the Cook Memorial Library at 2006 Fourth St., or call 541-962-1339.
