Summer music camps begin Monday

The sound of music will be alive next week as the La Grande Summer Music Camp starts its first session of the summer.

The camp, hosted by Emerson Music Arts in partnership with the Art Center at the Old Library, will be held in three sessions: June 10-14, June 24-28 and August 12-16. The first and final sessions are for Pre-K through second-graders, while the middle one is for third- through sixth-graders. The camps for the younger children will run from 9 a.m. to noon, while the middle one will run until 2 p.m.

“There are music concerts each day exposing the children to different styles and genres of music,” said Camp Director Mark Emerson. The children will also be building instruments — windchimes, maracas, ocean drums and metal shakers. “We do incorporate it into the final concert, and when the kids go home we don’t want it to go into the trash.”

The session geared toward older children will have them creating gourd shakers. They will also choose between lessons in piano or recorder.

“We don’t expect the students to have any experience,” Emerson said. “If they have some, that’s perfectly fine.”

Instructors include Emerson, a professional percussionist, drummer and Orff specialist; his wife Lea, a professional pianist, songwriter and worship leader; and five other local musicians, directors and instructors. Classes will not be limited to music and will explore dance, drama, movement and more.

Camps will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, located at  902 Fourth St.

Registration is open with no deadlines. Registration is available online at www.emersonmusicarts.com or by calling 541-605-0425.
