Interim La Grande School District Superintendent Irv Nikolai, hours after being arrested by police for alleged sex abuse, submitted his resignation Friday. “With regret, effective immediately, I tender my resignation as interim superintendent of La Grande public schools due to urgent personal and family matters needing my attention,’’ said Nikolai in a letter he submitted via phone. Nikolai, 71, was arrested on charges of four counts of first-degree sex abuse of a child. The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at a birthday party in a north Hillsboro home. A Washington County grand jury, following an investigation, handed down an indictment for Nikolai’s arrest. He was escorted out of his office in handcuffs Friday around 8:05 a.m. by La Grande Police officers, a Hillsboro Police Department detective and an FBI agent. The La Grande School Board accepted Nikolai’s resignation at a meeting late Friday afternoon. School board chairman John McKinnon said an acting superintendent will be named next week. Nikolai, who is from Forest Grove, had served as interim superintendent since July 1, 2007, and was scheduled to step down at the end of June. The school board is in the middle of a search for a permanent superintendent. Nikolai is now lodged at the Union County Jail. He will later be transferred to a Washington County jail. Bail has been set at $1 million, according to a Hillsboro Police Department press release. |
