TOWN PUTS OUT NEW SIGN
ISLAND CITY The city might not be able to convince the U.S. Postal Service to designate it with its own ZIP code, but thats not stopping new expressions of pride.
We did it, said Judy Rygg, Island Citys recorder, explaining how a new concrete sign proclaiming the community came into being across Island Avenue from Walton Road.
Rygg, Mayor Dale DeLong and public works director Stan Thompson got the job done in recent weeks, placing tall, concrete letters into the side of a grassy mound.
DeLong said the city had a sign designer create the patterns for the letters, but then the patterns were enlarged and used to build the concrete forms, all by city staff and employees.
We did all the painting and installing, DeLong said.
The sign, facing toward the highway and into the community, is hard to miss and further landscaping promises to brighten the area even more as the city looks to the north of Island Avenue for future expansion.
The goal was to get the sign in place before the kickoff of the communitys annual Hog Wild Days celebration next Friday.
Goal completed. Welcome to Island City.
