Rue21 to open new store by Grocery Outlet in Island City by October
Local teens will have a new place to shop this fall.
Teen clothing store rue21 plans to open a store in Island City near the beginning of October.
Construction is under way for the store, which is located in front of Grocery Outlet off of Walton Road.
Mallory Machi, rue21 marketing associate, said the store will be 4,500 square feet and will employ about 16 people.
The store’s website has job postings for four management positions — three full-time and one part-time. Machi said there will be about 12 sales
“The area was chosen because of its need for a teen retailer,” Machi said.
Rue21 has a store in Hermiston and another one in Ontario. The retailer has about 10 locations on the west side of the state. According to its website, rue21 “is a favorite with almost anyone looking for fashion that is young, fresh and affordable.” According to the rue21 website, the retailer has 939 store locations in 47 states with headquarters located just north of Pittsburgh in Warrendale, Pa.
The company was founded in 1987 as Pennsylvania Fashions Inc.
In May, rue21 said was purchased by Apax Partners for about $1.1 billion, including debt, according to the New York Times. The leveraged buyout capped the resurgence of rue21, which had filed for bankruptcy in 2002 and re-emerged the next year. Since then, the company has grown and its stock price has risen more than 40 percent since going public in 2009, the Times said.
Under the terms of the deal, Apax agreed to pay $42 a share, according to the Times.
