Two candidates set for race

Three berths on the Elgin School Board are up for election, but the race for Position 1 is the only contested race.

The race features two candidates — longtime community members Twila Ivins and Dee Mackie — vying to succeed incumbent Misti McClure.

McClure cannot run for re-election for her berth because it is an in-city position and she has moved outside the city limits. McClure, who still resides in the Elgin School District, can complete her term, which expires June 30.

Mackie and Ivins have never served on the Elgin School Board, but they have strong ties to the Elgin School District.

Mackie worked for the school district for 27 years as a custodian before retiring several years ago. She has retained a strong Elgin connection to the district, working as a bus driver for Mid-Columbia Bus Co. Mackie drives a route within the Elgin School District, transporting Elgin students to and from school. Mackie also takes Elgin classes on field trips and sports teams to athletic events.

Mackie said her work as a bus driver has allowed her to get to know the students and teachers of the district.

Mackie also said that her years of working for the Elgin School District have given her insight, which would serve her well as a board member.

“While working for the school district, I’ve seen good things and bad things take place,’’ said Mackie, who has lived in Elgin since June 1967.

Ivins, who grew up in Elgin, is a 1985 Elgin High School graduate. She has been linked closely with the school district since graduating. Ivins earlier served as the head volleyball coach at Elgin High School for about 10 years through 2011 and was a member of the Stella Mayfield School Parent Teacher Organization for a number of years, including one in which she was president.

“I feel I have a good background of the school system. I know the teachers and the children,’’ Ivins said.

Ivins is also actively involved in many community activities.

“I like doing volunteer work,’’ Ivins said.

Ivins is the Elgin representative for Union County Little League and is a 4-H volunteer, serving as leader of Elgin’s 4-H Snacks Club.

Mackie is also active as a community volunteer, currently serving as a member of the Elgin TV Association Board and the Elgin Planning
