Union council remains intact

UNION — The Union City Council didn’t see any of its fold resign at Monday night’s meeting.

This wouldn’t be news, of course, except for the continuing regional fallout of new state ethics reporting laws, which require certain public officials to file statements of economic interest (SEIs).

While City Administrator Jeff Wise and several of the councilors expressed reservations about listing their relatives on the SEI forms — a change from past years, they said — they indicated they would nonetheless file.

(Unlike some local communities like Elgin, newly required by 2007 amendments to comply, Union was included in the original ORS 244 legislation of 1974.)

This pleased Mayor Kyle Corbin. Although he agreed that some aspects of the requirements warranted further legislative study, he said councilors also had a duty to the citizenry.
