WALLOWA COUNTY SENDS ANOTHER VOLUNTEER TO NYC

ENTERPRISE The Wallowa County Red Cross chapter has been contributing directly to the New York relief effort.

All the blood from the Sept. 5 blood drive here went to New York, more than $4,000 not counting money donated directly to the national organization has been donated and a second Wallowa County volunteer was sent to

New York.

In her first Red Cross assignment, mental health counselor Judy Wandschneider is scheduled to work there a couple weeks.

The Red Cross learned at the Oklahoma City bomb site that 10 days to two weeks is all a mental health counselor can take in these situations. Burnout sets in real fast, said Gerald Perren of the local Red Cross chapter. Were real pleased that she was able to go.

To qualify for such an assignment, last fall Wandschneider and Wallowa Memorial Hospital nurse Reinhard Fritsch attended Disaster Mental Health training in Bend. Fritsch is willing to go, but has not been called.

Nurse Mary Lou Brink has been involved in the New York effort for two weeks. Its something when a little community like ours is able to send two volunteers to New York, Perren said.

The American Red Cross relies on contributions of peoples time. Skilled Red Cross disaster volunteers will be needed in the coming months and the best way to offer assistance is to call the local chapter to get free, specialized training.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by donations of time and money.

The Red Cross national organizations reports that most current in-kind needs have been met, so the best way to provide support is through financial donations.

To help the victims of this and other disasters, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW. Internet users can make a secure online credit card contribution by visiting www.redcross.org.

Contributions can also be sent to the local chapter at P.O. Box 158, Enterprise 97828. For information call 426-6422.
